We can acknowledge that the future won't be the same as the past - not by a long shot. What are the opportunities for communities, learning and research? What enhancements and changes might we expect? Is this the final straw for libraries or the biggest opportunity for us since the advent of the web?

Health Informatics: The Role of Information Professionals in a Modern Information-driven Healthcare System
Health informatics is an interdisciplinary discipline that promotes informatics-driven strategies and tools to capture, represent, share, analyze and apply healthcare data, information and knowledge to improve healthcare. These are highly interesting times for health informatics in Canada; we are witnessing the deployment of health informatics solutions in healthcare institutions across Canada and beyond, such as electronic medical records, health information systems, decision support systems, patient/provider portals, and E-health (tele-consultation, tele-medicine, etc.) programs. This talk will present a broad introduction to the field of health informatics, especially introducing key health informatics initiatives within Canada. Furthermore, the talk will highlight the opportunities for new information professionals to actively participate and succeed in the emerging field of health informatics.

eDiscovery - Compliance Challenges in an Electronic World
E-Discovery and E-Disclosure are relatively new to Canada but are rapidly growing areas. Litigation always required the parties to produce their relevant documents, but the majority of documents are now not in paper form. Word processing, email and the internet have changed the legal landscape when it comes to producing records. There are very serious legal consequences for failure to comply with the Civil Procedure Rules in litigation. Lawyers now need to work closely with information management personnel and with IT to locate, preserve, and produce copies of electronic documents in compliance with the requirements in the Civil Procedure Rules. This session will be an introduction to the language used by the various stakeholders, the legal requirements in place, and the kinds of work each group must do as a team to ensure compliance with the Rules.

Lunch will be served immediately following the break out sessions. During lunch you will be able to make bids on items for sale at our silent auction, as well as look at the posters entered into our poster competition.

Digital Collections Panel: Preserving culture and information in the digital age
As institutions take on digitization projects, certain questions and concerns emerge. How do different organizations handle “born-digital” records as well as traditional hard-copy materials converting to digital format? How do professionals maintain digital libraries and do they have the responsibility to become a permanent repository? What are the rights and responsibilities of the institution regarding digital materials? From a collections management standpoint, what is the criteria for selection and weeding a digital library collection? Do the same standards for collections development for physical materials apply to digital artifacts? Finally, what technological trends are emerging in the field and what should information professionals be on the look-out for? Our diverse and expert panel will touch upon these topics and more issues surrounding the field of digital libraries, archives and repositories.

Moderated by Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd, this panel will cover the latest tools and techniques in the world of scholarly digital libraries, with a special focus on technology trends that make it easier to discover and share scientific knowledge and improve users' experience. This Sciverse initiative was spearheaded by Dalhousie's Social Media Lab, who students are working on their apps in collaboration with. Rolf Kwakkelaar, Content Innovation Manager at Elsevier, will also be giving a presentation on the Article of the Future initiative.

In 2013 keeping and improving competitive advantage requires new business models and a heightened sensitivity to the power of networks that foster creativity and collaboration. The open-source movement is built upon a culture of sharing. An understanding and active participation in this model is fundamental to economic prosperity. Our industry is the most significant player in this transformation and proficiency in the collection, analysis and distribution of information (data science) is extremely valuable.
